My mission is to zealously advocate for individuals with disabilities,
focusing on appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.
I strive to empower parents and professionals with information and skills
to ensure that all students have access to high quality education.
I strive to empower self-advocates with the strategies
they need to take their rightful place in our community. I am an attorney whose
practice is limited to Special Education issues, Section 504 matters, ADA
violations, and other disability discrimination cases.
Experience
1989 – present Attorney, Author, Disability Activist
Opened private law
office in Norwalk, Connecticut in 2002, focusing my practice on students with
disabilities who have been denied an appropriate education. Experience in IEP
meetings, 504 meetings, mediation, due process, and manifestation determinations. Some
experience advocating for adults with disabilities.
Co-Author of IEP
and Inclusion Tips for Parents and Teachers. Written with Kathleen Whitbread,
Ph.D. (2006). Attainment Company.
Popular local,
state-wide, national, and international
presenter and trainer on special education legal rights under IDEA, FERPA,
Section 504, ADA, and NCLB, also “Using the IEP Process to Achieve Inclusion.”
Author and facilitator of Mock IEPs, performing throughout The United States.
Executive Director and founder of SPED*NET New Canaan, a monthly forum focused
on special education and section 504 issues, providing monthly speakers,
state-wide conferences, extensive training courses, and state-wide listserv.

of New Canaan Public Schools Special Education Director’s Parent Advisory
Committee - 11 years; Partners in Policymaking graduate; numerous other volunteer
activities. Trained parents and professionals in a 14 hours class, “Understanding
Special Education – Families as Partners” - 8 classes in total. Member of the Board of Directors for
the CT Down Syndrome Congress.
I
personally ensured that my eldest of four children, Eva, who has Down syndrome,
was fully and successfully included in our neighborhood high school. Yep, she
even took Algebra. She now attends college.
